Introduction to Natural Dyeing, Jun. 21 (Sat), 11-5pm, Catskill
Instructor: Natalie Stopka
Class Description:
This one-day workshop delves into beautiful, accessible, and sustainable natural dyes for both protein and cellulose fibers. Starting with best practices of fiber preparation, we’ll then extract color for 24 swatches in a rainbow of hues. This process will demystify mordants and address the all-important question of longevity! All fibers and dyes will be provided for a mini swatch library. Participants are welcome to bring one additional pre-washed garment, skein, or yard of natural fiber for a personal project. We’ll discuss safety considerations, foraging ethics, and the colorful history of natural dye use. Participants are asked to wear studio-safe clothing; we might get messy!
Instructor Bio:
Natalie Stopka is an artist and educator focused on natural materials and sustainable studio practice. Her artwork incorporates botanical dyes and pigments, which provide a seasonally evolving vocabulary of texture and color. Natalie’s freelance studio and dye garden are located in Yonkers, New York. She holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and MFA from the University of New Mexico.

Cancellation Policy:
Please consider carefully before signing up for one of our classes or purchasing a class for another person. Due to the small class size for in-person workshops and the limited number of looms, each person makes an important contribution to the group dynamic and cancelling within short notice can make it difficult to fill your spot. If you do need to cancel, please be aware of our policies:
There are no refunds for class fees. However, if the cancellation is 30 or more days before the start of the workshop, you have the option of rescheduling for a different class free of charge. If the cancellation is fewer than 30 days from the start of the workshop, there is the option of rescheduling only if your spot is filled from the Waitlist or another person. You also have the option of transferring your class reservation to another person at any point. The closer the start date, the more difficult it can be to fill a spot from the Waitlist.
No refunds will be given on gift certificates. (Updated 04/24/2025)
