Introduction to Fabric Marbling, May 3 (Sat), 10-4pm, Catskill, NY
Instructor: Claire Reynes
Class Description:
This class is an introduction to the fascinating and historied art of water marbling. Marbling is a process in which paints are floated on a liquid surface and worked into patterns using different methods and tools. The marbled pattern is then transferred to paper, fabric, or object. In the first half of the class, participants will begin by playing with different approaches to applying color and pattern to the marbling vat, trying out different tools, rakes, and a stylus to “paint” on the marbling liquid and create images. We will cover how to choose the correct materials and how to prepare them for the optimal marbling experience. Each participant will have several sheets of paper to practice these different marbling techniques. During the second portion of the class, there will be a discussion around color theory, and everyone will have the opportunity to create a personal color palette and marbling vat. These more refined and planned marbled designs will then be transferred onto high-quality fabric that can be used in the creation of future projects. All materials and equipment will be provided.

Intructor Bio:
Claire Reynes is an artist and educator living in South Portland, Maine. Her work involves handmade paper, water marbling, and sewing that draws from nature and the human body. Claire owns and operates Tempered East, a marbling studio that creates small-batch marbled papers, fabrics, and one-of-a-kind pieces for your home or your closet. Her work is a manifestation of the meditative experience of marbling and papermaking, pulling unexpected colors and textures together in a repetitive design that emulates moments in nature. The organic repetition of the shadows of leaves cast on the sidewalk, lichen patches covering the natural pattern of a rock, and the repeating layers of barnacles in a tide pool are all vignettes she draws on for inspiration. She teaches introductory marbling workshops on paper and fabric and has been hosted at studios and institutions across the country.

Cancellation policy:
Please consider carefully before signing up for one of our classes or purchasing a class for another person. Due to the small class size for in-person workshops and the limited number of looms, each person makes an important contribution to the group dynamic and cancelling within short notice can make it difficult to fill your spot. If you do need to cancel, please be aware of our policies:
If the cancellation is 30 or more days before the start of the workshop, you have the option of rescheduling for a different class free of charge. If the cancellation is fewer than 30 days from the start of the workshop, this results in forfeiture of your entire course fee. Rescheduling in fewer than 30 days is only available if your spot can be from the waitlist. However, the closer the start date, the more difficult it can be to fill a spot from the Waitlist.
No refunds will be given on gift certificates. (Updated 03/27/2025)
